What can you do about it ?

One of the keys to keeping your skin healthy is choosing skin care products that work on both types of skin.

I love the Balancing Cleanser for Combination Dry and Combination Oily Skin types because it has activated charcoal to absorb the impurities from the oilier areas but is in a lotion base which is great for the drier areas of the skin.

Another cleanser for the very oily combination skin type would be the Oil Control Cleanser which would help balance oil.

The Deep Pore Cleanser would work on combination dry skin that is not very dry.

You can brighten and smooth out the complexion with Hydrating Serum.

Mild exfoliation will help even the skin tone and remove build up, but too much can be irritating and abrasive.

A lightweight hydrating moisturizer will help your skin maintain it's moisture level but only on the dry areas; and

last but not least sun protection of SPF 30 or more would be fantastic!  Sunscreen not only helps to ward off cancer, but it helps even your skin tone too !

And never  wash your face with hot water.   Light steaming of not more than once per week would be beneficial especially if done at night along with your evening regimen.
  • Develop good skin care regimen for dry skin.
  • Eat a Diet High in Antioxidants and Essential Fatty Acids
  • Drink Plenty of Water
  • Consume Caffeine in Moderation
  • Exercise
  • Change your skin care regimen when the weather changes, if necessary.
  • Make sure you to read leaflet that comes with medication to see if and how that medication affects your skin

What is Combination Skin ?

So what exactly what does it mean to have combination skin ?
Combination skin is better understood if it is divided into two subcategories:  combination dry and combination oily.

Combination Dry Skin:

This type of skin is characterized as having parts of the face that are predominantly drier while lesser parts of the face are oily.  Whereas, a combination oily skin would be mostly oily, but with some dryness.

A good example of a combination dry skin would be if the forehead and cheeks and nose are dry but the chin is oily.   Another would be the cheeks and chin and dry, but the forehead is oily.   In each case, the majority of the face is dry.   Or the forehead and nose could be dry, but the remainder of the face is oily

Combination Oily Skin:

If you have this type of skin,  you probably have the typical T-zone (forehead, nose & chin) combination skin.  In this example, the majority of the face, forehead, nose & chin) are oily and maybe parts of the cheek around the nose area.

The challenge for this type of skin is finding a regimen that works on both types of skin simultaneously.    Usually, cleansers and tonors that work on the oilier areas of the face are too drying for the drier parts and vice versa.

How Do You Know if You Have Dry Skin ?

 Does Your Skin:
  • Look Smooth and have Small or Barely Visible Pores on parts of the face
  • Has Enlarged pores and visible shine on other parts of the face

And Do You ?

  • Have a problem finding skin care products that work on both skin types simultaneously ?
  • Do you dry out one part of the face too much to make the oilier parts feel right ?
  • Have to buy two sets of skin care products
  • Do you often breakout because of the products you use to help the dryer areas ?
What Causes Problems for Combination Skin?
  • Using skin care products that contain harsh chemicals and detergents - they strip the skin of it's natural protective barrier
  • Using a skin care regimen that does not work on combination skin.
  • Aging - Even persons with oily skin in youth can have dry skin in maturity
  • Changes in the weather or climate - in the Winter, dry skins become drier, in the Summer feels better but still needs a moisturizer
  • Medications - medications for diabetes, cholesterol, allergies (antihistamines), high blood pressure
  • Medical Conditions - hypothyroidism, diabetes, changes in hormones, high blood pressure
  • Excessive Caffeine Consumption
